Why Hire Tom

I limit the number of clients that I accept so that I will have sufficient time to work on every case that I handle and to give clients the attention they need and deserve. I attend every court date personally, no junior associate or investigator will suddenly appear in court with your file and no knowledge of your case. No paralegal or investigator will review the evidence in the case. All of that will be done by me personally so that I can bring my experience and knowledge to your defense.

I have been selected as one of the Top 75 DUI attorneys in South Carolina in 2013 by the National Advocacy Center for DUI Defense. I have also been selected as one of the Top 100 Criminal Defense Lawyers in South Carolina in 2014 by the American Society of Legal Advocates and one of the American Trial Lawyers Association's Top 100 Trial Lawyers in 2009. I have been awarded the Martindale-Hubbell Client Distinction Award in 2014 for quality of service, overall value, responsiveness and communication. AVVO has given me a rating of Excellent. I have taught at the National District Attorney's College and at seminars for the SC Bar and the National Business Institute.

I have practiced law for 38 years and for each of those years have practiced in criminal court. I have handled every type of criminal case in that time – from shoplifting and criminal domestic violence cases to armed robbery and murder cases. In over a dozen of the cases my clients faced the death penalty. In every matter I handle my goal is to aggressively defend your rights and your future. While I understand the importance of settling cases outside the courtroom, I also know there is no substitute for having a lawyer on your side who is ready to fight on your behalf.

I have been counsel in over one thousand driving under the influence (DUI/DUAC) cases including people charged in military court and federal court, under twenty-one (21), or with a high breathalyzer (BAC) or involved in an accident.

I am admitted in every Court, State and Federal, in South Carolina and also in the Federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

I have handled cases in Greenville County, Spartanburg County, Laurens County, Pickens County, Anderson County and throughout South Carolina appearing in over 50 courts.

I have been in private practice in Greenville since 2002. Prior to that I worked in the Greenville County Solicitor's Office as a violent crimes prosecutor and head of one of the two trial teams in the office. I became familiar with all of the players in the area's criminal justice system, including the judges, the police officers, and the other prosecutors. I learned about the way they approach cases. That knowledge is extremely valuable when it comes to designing a defense strategy that is intended to protect you. I have also served as the Chief Public Defender in Richland County and Chief Public Defender in Beaufort County.

I am a member of many important legal organizations including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Federal Bar Association, the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National College of DUI Defense and the South Carolina Center for Equal Justice. There is a reason for my membership in each one: You. These groups are very important resources that I participate in actively. I can turn to them to share ideas and gather information that can better be used to design your defense.

With the requisite knowledge and experience I can provide you all the help the law will allow. I look forward to meeting and representing you. I am committed to defending your future against any state or federal charges.
